Cut Nails and Hair on auspicious Wednesday or Friday day!

Cutting Nails and Hair on Auspicious Wednesday  or  Friday day!

Remember the embargo on cutting nails or hair? I use the word ‘embargo’ because back when my grandmother was alive, there was an official ban on cutting nails or hair within the house on certain days and the time of the day when these activities could be carried out too was scrutinized by her.

For example, hair could not be cut on any auspicious day or festival. Cutting nails was a big no within the house. Heck, we had to hang out of our balcony to do the deed. Also, no nails to be cut in the evening or in the night. Because of her disciplining, my parents grounded the same rules too. As a child, I often rebelled but it was only later that I learned the real truth…

In Hinduism, each day of the week has a different significance. Each day has a ruling deity and a ruling planet. Therefore, activities performed on each day must be done in a manner in which it appeases the deities and pacifies the planets. If this rule is not followed, then you will invite wrath upon yourself!

  • 1. Somvar{Monday} is dedicated to Lord Shiva and ruled by the Moon.
  • 2. Mangalwar{Tuesday} is dedicated to Lord Hanuman and ruled by Mars.
  • 3. Budhwar{Wednesday} is dedicated to Lord Krishna and ruled by Mercury.
  • 4. Guruwar{Thursday} is dedicated Lord Vishnu and is ruled by Jupiter.
  • 5. Shukrawar{Friday} is dedicated to Maa Durga’s avatar Ma Santoshi and is ruled by Venus.
  • 6. Shanivar{Saturday} is dedicated to Lord Shani and is ruled by Saturn.
  • 7. Ravivar{Sunday} is dedicated to Surya Dev and is ruled by the Sun.

In the Hindu Dharma, rules related to one’s daily life follow many traditions and rituals. One such important rule is related to cutting of hair, nails, and shaving of beard – what is auspicious and inauspicious regarding such activity is noted. Therefore, there are certain days in the week in which cutting of hair, nails, and beard are considered lucky, on certain days they are inauspicious. Let us see…

#Monday

Somvar or Monday is related to the Moon in Hinduism. The celestial star – Moon has a direct effect on the human psyche. Therefore, cutting nails or hair on this day is highly inauspicious as it is believed that it can have a deeply negative impact on the individual’s mental health and even the child’s health.

#Tuesday

Cutting hair or shaving the beard on a Tuesday or Mangalwar is highly inauspicious. This is because such activities are linked to shortening of one’s life.

#Wednesday

Wednesday is my favorite day of the week and apparently, it is an auspicious day too, to cut hair and nails. By doing so, the house and its inhabitants are blessed by Goddess Lakshmi with success and progress. Also, Ma Lakshmi dwells in the house for long.

#Thursday

Thursday or Guruwar is the day dedicated to Lord Vishnu. On this day, if one happens to cut their nails or hair it is considered as an insult to Ma Lakshmi and is a dishonor to her.

#Friday

Friday or Shukrawar is often considered a symbol of glamor. This comes as no surprise as this day is associated with the planet Venus, the planet of beauty. Therefore, cutting hair and nails on this day is auspicious. By doing so, it invites success, money, and fame.

#Saturday

Shanivar or Saturday is a day dedicated to lord Shani. Cutting hair or nails on this day is considered inauspicious and dangerous. It indicates untimely or sudden death by accident.

#Sunday

Ravivar or Sunday is the day dedicated to the Sun god or Surya Dev. Cutting hair or nails on this day is considered inauspicious. In the epic Mahabharata, it is stated that because this day is associated with the Sun, cutting hair and nails on this day indicates the destruction of wealth, mental health, and dharma.
